About Prairie Flora
Welcome to Prairie Flora
At Prairie Flora, we specialize in growing native Manitoba wildflowers and grasses for homeowners, landscapers, and market gardeners. We also grow a large selection of heirloom vegetable, flower, and herb plants.
Our Vision is to build a plant nursery that will help both Nature and our community thrive. We aspire to learn from Nature and mimic her natural processes so we can grow our plants in a way that works with Nature rather than against her. And we love helping our customers do the same.
By growing native plants, you build a landscape that provides nutritious food and habitat for wildlife, helps conserve water, build soil, and is adapted to the climate and soils of Manitoba. You will know that your landscape is helping the planet.
We are focused on creating a product that is sustainable. We currently grow all our plants in soil with 100% OMRI certified ingredients. All our native plants are grown using seeds which originate from local prairie remnants, and we use all-natural pest management.
Our little impacts for 2023
When you keep hearing news of a changing climate, it is tough to feel like you are doing enough to help life on this planet, but we believe that every little action counts and it's important to be optimistic. Earlier this year, we designed and began construction on a new greenhouse table. It will capture all water runoff for re-use and use root zone heating for a more efficient use of energy. We also started adding our own homemade compost to our soil mix with positive results.
To help our community, every year we donate plants and a percentage of our sales to a selection of local garden clubs and other non-profit organizations.
Going forward
The use of peat moss in our soil mix is a concern for our peatlands and for us. This year, we are trialing coco coir, which is a waste product made from coconut husks, and an alternative to peat moss, and we are on the search for other more local waste products to try as well. We like the fact that our native plant containers can be re-used several times over, but continue to weigh the benefits of alternative packaging, and are trying out a few types of biodegradable pots.
We are further developing our native plant selection to include more shade-loving plant solutions. We continue to search for heirloom plants that thrive in our short, extreme summers, and will help to provide food security for our community.
We hope our customers and community join us in standing up for planet earth and all her precious life. Together, our little impacts can make a significant difference.
