About Prairie Flora
Welcome to Prairie Flora
At Prairie Flora, we specialize in growing native Manitoba wildflowers and grasses for homeowners, landscapers, and market gardeners. We also grow a large selection of heirloom vegetable, flower, and herb plants.
By growing native plants you build a landscape that provides nutritious food and habitat for wildlife, helps conserve water, build soil, and is adapted to the climate and soils of Manitoba. You will know that your landscape is helping the planet. Our Vision is to build a plant nursery that will help both Nature and our community thrive. We aspire to learn from Nature so we can grow our plants in a way that works with her rather than against her and we love helping our customers do the same.
We are focused on creating a product that is sustainable. We currently grow all our plants in soil with 100% OMRI certified ingredients. All our native plants are grown using seeds which originate from local prairie remnants, and we use all-natural pest management.
Our little impacts for 2026
It is tough to feel like you are doing enough to help life on this planet, but we believe that every little action counts and it's important to be optimistic. Last year, we finished reconstruction of our new greenhouse table. It's designed for more efficient use of energy, and the plants love its root zone heating. Also, it will now capture all water runoff for re-use. This is also first year that our annual potted plants will come to you in compostable pots. These peat-free pots are certified organic and made from 100% North American recycled paper. We continue to experiment with our own homemade compost from food scraps and dry plant debris. To help our community, every year we donate plants and a percentage of our sales to a selection of local garden clubs and other non-profit organizations.
Going forward
The use of peat moss in our soil mix is a concern for our peatlands and for us. We are trying up to 20% Typha in our soil mix this season, an innovative local alternative to peat moss. It is dried and processed cattail stems sustainably harvested from the wetlands around Lake Winnipeg. As far as our native (perennial) plant containers go, it has been a challenge to find local, sustainable pots that we can use, but we are pushing forward. Our current pots can be re-used several times over. So, until we find a more sustainable alternative, we will continue to look for ways to recapture and re-use more of these pots, like our handy drop-off bins for returning them.
We are further developing our native plant selection to include more shade-loving plant solutions. We will also focus on learning how to grow native plants that both need help with conservation and are suitable for growing in our landscapes. We continue to search for local heirloom seeds that thrive in our short, extreme summers, and will help to provide food security for our community.
We hope our customers and community join us in standing up for planet earth and all her precious life. Together, our little impacts can make a significant difference.
